Indigenous Leadership Takes Root In Many Sectors

One could argue that there's never been a more passionate advocate for treaty rights than Billy Frank Jr. The Nisqually citizen led the Washington state tribe in protecting the environment, as well as subsistence fishing rights. Willie Frank III is Billy's son. He is the current chairman of the Nisqually Tribe. Lillian Sparks Robinson's 20-year career in Washington has prepared her to run her own business called Wopila Consulting. She is a past commissioner of the Administration for Native Americans - and a former executive director of the National Indian Education Association. Every year, the National Center recognizes 40 Indigenous leaders under the age of 40. Bryan Polite has been recognized with this honor this year. He chairs the council of trustees for the Shinnecock Indian nation.
